Hiring a monetization product manager costs $140,000 to $170,000 or more in US base salary, plus three to six months of search and ramp. At $2M to $15M ARR, pricing is usually a 4 to 8 week project rather than a role. Hire the role when pricing changes become quarterly, not annual.

You are not ready to hire if usage itself is flat. Repackaging a product people do not stick with just re-prices churn. If activation and retention are healthy but revenue lags usage growth, then it is pricing.

Three conditions, and you generally need at least two. A self-serve motion with enough volume to run real pricing experiments. A product surface where packaging changes ship monthly, on usage tiers, add-ons or seat expansion mechanics. And existing product leadership that will direct the role. Enterprise-sales-led companies at $2M to $15M ARR rarely meet these.
Four to eight weeks in sequence. Audit the current model against actual usage and expansion data, to find where value is delivered but not captured. Interview 10 to 15 customers on willingness to pay, framed around value moments rather than asking whether they would pay more. Rebuild packaging: tiers that map to segments, a metric that scales with value, an expansion path that does not require a sales fight. Then ship it with a migration plan for existing customers, which is where most pricing changes actually fail.
Assign it before the project ends. At this stage that is the head of product, or the founder explicitly, with a quarterly review on the calendar. Pricing that nobody owns drifts back to whatever sales negotiates deal by deal, and eighteen months later you are running the project again.
